This program covers the complete end to end process of corrective action beginning with problem identification and continuing through solution institutionalization. The major emphasis is placed on the diagnostic phase of problem solving which includes defining the problem, understanding the process, identifying possible causes, collecting data, and analyzing that data to reach conclusions. The program also addresses solution generation, selection, implementation, evaluation, and long term sustainment. While the focus is on recurring operational problems rather than major incident investigations, the principles apply broadly across manufacturing, healthcare, financial services, government, and other sectors. The program excludes heavy statistical methods and instead emphasizes logical deductive analysis and critical thinking.
Upon completing this program, learners will be able to apply a structured logical methodology to identify the underlying causes of problems that have proven resistant to simple fixes. Learners will distinguish between physical causes and system causes, develop meaningful problem statements, construct process flowcharts and logic trees, plan and execute data collection, analyze data using appropriate graphical tools, generate creative solutions, select among alternatives using decision criteria, implement changes effectively, and sustain improvements over time. Learners will also recognize common cognitive biases that undermine problem solving and organizational cultural factors that support or hinder effective corrective action.
This program is intended for quality professionals, process owners, operations managers, maintenance supervisors, incident investigators, internal and external auditors, and any individual within an organization who holds responsibility for responding to nonconformities, customer complaints, equipment failures, or performance shortfalls. The program assumes no prior training in root cause analysis but does assume basic familiarity with the learners own work processes and a willingness to question assumptions.
The methodology presented aligns with the corrective action requirements found in various management system standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, IATF 16949, and similar frameworks. These standards generally require organizations to identify nonconformities, determine their causes, take action to prevent recurrence, and verify the effectiveness of those actions. However, most standards provide little guidance on how to actually perform the diagnostic work. This program fills that gap by providing a practical, repeatable method for finding causes. The approach also supports legal and regulatory expectations for due diligence in failure investigation across industries such as healthcare, aviation, food processing, and environmental management.
Learners who successfully complete the program will receive a dated, traceable certificate that provides verifiable proof of their achievement for professional records.
